General info

A lot of children from the Ukraine lost their parents or became ill through the catastrophy of Tschernobyl. Most children suffer from incureable illnesses like leukemia or lymphatic cancer.
In addition to that the economy situation is extremely bad. The official unemployment rate is higher than 50%. Most people who have a job have not received any payment for months. The complete infrastructure (food, medical care, energy, water, flats & houses) is not working anymore.

Consequently, GLOBAL 2000 started their project "Tschernobyl-Kinder" (Children of Tschernobyl) in 1995.
The project works on three levels: actions to improve the local infrastructure, humanitarian deliveries (medical care, clothes, ...) and vacation in Austria for the poor children from the Ukraine. To organize this work GLOBAL 2000 cooperates with many organisations from Austria and foreign countries: Austrian Airlines, Austrian TV, some TV Stations from Bavaria (Germany), Austrian-Ukrainian Community, Austrian Red Cross and a lot of more.

Until the end of 1998 a lot of help was organized:

  • 19 transports brought medical care, food and clothes for more than 1,5 Million US$.
  • the haematological (blood science) ward of the childrenīs hospital in Kharkov was rebuilt with US$ 250.000.-
  • 9 vacation holidays with 156 children and 24 escort people (doctors, ...) were organised.

Childrenīs hospital in Kharkov

children's hospital kharkov

The project was started in 1995 in the Ukrainian city Kharkov.

The haematological ward of the childrenīs hospital no. 16 treats children who suffer from leukemia - the result of Tschernobyl. The quality of medical care was really bad, standard-equipment like soaps and microscopes were as missing as important and livesaving gadgets and medicine.

What has happened so far:
10 transports (worth: 1 Mio. US$) brought medicine and important gadgets. The hospital was fit out with equipment for cure, testing and analyses.

1998 the complete hospital became of the same standard like a normal Austrian hospital. This costed about US$ 250.000.-

The situation in the whole hospital became better. 1995 only 12-15% of the children survived. In 1997 it was an amazing 60-70%.

Organized projects for 1999-2000:
More medicine and equipment for the hospitals. Special training for the Ukrainian doctors through Austrian doctors. Vacation holidays in Austria for the children.

Hospital "Stanishovka" in Zhitomir

regional hospital stanishovka/zhitomir

This hospital became a very important part of this project in December 1996. 438 children are registered in Stanishovka with illnesses which are the results of Tschernobyl. They are under medical treatment here. The medical support was really bad - there were not enough equipment and even not enough doctors.

What has happened so far:
4 transports with important stuff and equipment worth more than US$ 450.000.- were brought to Zhitomir.

The hospital was supplied with this important stuff. In addition to this a dentist-ward was build.

Organized projects for 1999-2000:
More medicine and equipment for the hospitals. Special training for the Ukrainian doctors through Austrian doctors. Vacation holidays in Austria for the children.

Orphanage Shchetovo

orphanage shchetovo

In spring 1998 the campaign was extended to the orphanage Shchetovo in Antrazit/Lugansk.

There are living 200 children at the age of 6 to 14 in Shchetovo. Everything was missing - even food and clothes. The building was damaged, no water and even no toilets or heating.

What has happened so far:
4 transports (about US$ 100.000.-) brought washing machines, sewing machines, clothes and water. The heatings were repaired.

Organized projects for 1999-2000:
The renovation of the complete building, additional transports with food and clothes and the restart of the local farming.

Vacation for children

vacation for children

Very important for the childrenīs recovering were the vacation holidays in Austria. They have the chance to enjoy holiday with fun and friends and are well looked after by doctors. Through this holiday the recovering-process was speeded up and their chance to survive was increased.

What has happened so far:
9 organized holidays with 156 children in 4 different Austrian cities.

Organized projects for 1999-2000:
Vacation holidays in 9 different Austrian cities with about 70 to 80 children.

To organize this holidays GLOBAL 2000 cooperates with a lot of other organisations like Austrian Airlines and several nursing homes.
