Why protect forests?

Forests may mean different things to different people. For some they provide shelter, food and clothing. For others, forests are visited as a place of recreation, relaxation, solitude and inspiration. But for all of us, it is important to remember that forests play a vital role in the health of our planet: preventing droughts and floods, purifying the very air we breathe, and providing important medicinal plants which can cure terminal illnesses. So, if we do not protect our forests we are jeopardising our future and the future of the planet. Protecting forests is an urgent issue! Every day our forests are being threatened and destroyed... - unsustainable and illegal logging - forest fires (in 1997 and 1998 alone, more than 14 million hectares of forests were burnt worldwide) - climate change - the rapid rate of global warming puts one-third of the world's forests at risk - land clearance for agriculture...
