Michael
Jackson opens the Nasdaq stock market.
In one of the more bizarre moments in stock market history,
the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson, opened up
the Nasdaq stock market to kick off his upcoming 30th
anniversary concerts at Madison Square Garden.
Wearing a dark suit with a gray armband around his right arm,
the moonwalking megastar looked slightly uncomfortable as
he walked around the Nasdaq market site, waving and blowing
kisses to the onlookers and chatting with Nasdaq's Chief Executive
Officer Wick Simmons and Executive Vice President David Weild.
Shortly after he pushed the opening button, the singer, who
celebrated his 43rd birthday on Wednesday, was presented with
a huge birthday cake and a vintage poster of Shirley
Temple. "I'm deeply moved at this very special moment
for me," said Jackson. "Thank you David and
Wick and Nasdaq. Thank you so much. I love you and all the
fans. Thank you." Jackson was presented with an award
by Nasdaq Chief Executive Hardwick Simmons.
Though Michael Jackson might not be the first person you think
of when it comes to investing in tech stocks, Nasdaq's feting
of the star marks the latest chapter in the ever-growing bond
between entertainment and finance.
Thriller of an Opening
"We're always looking for people that have an impact on
America and American culture and the economy to do the opening," says Nasdaq spokeswoman Judy Inosanto. "Michael
Jackson is opening his tour in New York and he is certainly
a big part of American culture. The synergies were just sort
of there.".

29, 2001: Video Clip - "You Rock My World"
- Scoops |
|
The
following has been taken from British tabloid The
Sun [August 29, 2001]:
Michael Jackson could not get Robert De Niro to star in the video for his new single - so he has
called in Marlon Brando instead.
"You Rock My World" is Jacko's first release
since 1997. Above is an exclusive look at the Big Brother-style
cover [note: see news below].
The king of pop held up work on the promo - said to
be more like a short film - for three weeks hoping megastar
De Niro could make it. But Bob, in Italy filming his
latest movie "City By The Sea", finally said
he could not guarantee when he will be free.
So Jacko - who celebrates his 43rd birthday today -
convinced another Hollywood legend, Brando, to take
his place. Filming is due to start later this week.
The video, by top director Paul Hunter, will also feature
"Traffic" star Benicio Del Toro, US
comic Chris Tucker and the cast of top TV
gangster show "The Sopranos".
An insider told me it will be even better than Jacko's
classic "Thriller". He added: "This will
be a video like no other - with some of the top names
in showbiz. Michael wants to come back with a bang and
he knows people will expect a great video. It
will also show Michael in a new light and should even
blow Thriller away."
The video problems mean the single, originally due out
on September 3, will now be released on October 8.

22, 2001: The Sun On "You Rock My World" |
|
The
following report on "You Rock My World" has
been taken from British tabloid The
Sun [August 22, 2001] - and fasten your seatbelts:
The Sun can be positive!
Jacko back on tracko
Michael Jackson's new single is one of the most anticipated
tracks in recent years - and after being one of
the first to hear it I reckon it will be a monster
hit.
Even though there is still no definite release date
for "You Rock My World", it's a sure-fire
chart-topper and will go down a storm in clubs.
It sounds a bit like the Jackson Five but has a funky
keyboard hook you won't be able to get out of your head.
Die-hard fans are already getting their hands on the
catchy track after a pirate copy was put on the internet.
The production is layered and stunning and I can't wait to hear the rest of his new album,
"Invincible".
"You Rock My World" - Jacko's first release
since 1997 - reminds me somewhat of Bobby Brown's "Two
Can Play At That Game".
Oddly, it starts off with some meaningless, and unnecessary,
dialogue between Jacko and US comedian Chris Tucker
before launching into a backing beat that wouldn't have
sounded out of place in the mid-Eighties.
This is followed by Jacko's unmistakable vocals, complete
with a few trademark "Oows", reminiscent of "Bad"
or "Leave Me Alone".
It's not as explosive as "Billie Jean" or
"Thriller" but has an unforgettable groove. I doubted he still had it in him but he's proved
worthy of his King Of Pop crown.

20, 2001: You Rock My World - Sony's Actions... |
|
The
following has been taken from Planet
Jackson [Monday, August 20, 2001]:
Unauthorized Radio Debut On Friday, August 17th, "You
Rock My World" premiered on two radio stations in
New York. An unidentified source leaked the song to
the radios without authorization from Sony Music or Michael Jackson.
Shortly afterwards, copies of the track have been created
and circulated through the internet, ultimately reaching
airplay on radio stations around the world.
Sony Music has now taken action to prevent
radio stations from playing Michael Jackson's new single.
Both radio stations that originally premiered "You Rock
My World" in New York have been ordered to not play
the song anymore. And they have agreed to do so.
The copy of "You Rock My World" that has been played
so far has not been validated by Michael Jackson. It
is of poor quality and does not deliver the high standard
in production that Michael Jackson has always dedicated
himself to.
As a result of this unexpected development, Sony
Music has decided to advance the official radio premiere
of "You Rock My World". The King of Pop's new
single will debut worldwide on August 29th,
on Michael Jackson's birthday.

17, 2001: Jay-Z & Michael Duet Around Christmas... |
|
The
following excerpt has been taken from MTV [Friday, August 17, 2001, 7:57 AM EDT]:
Fans will have to wait awhile to hear another
potential Jay-Z hit, his duet with Michael
Jackson.
"I'm 'a hold out - probably put it on the album around
Christmas as an added bonus," Jay said. "It's
a special song."
Jay revealed that getting Jackson to come
out with him at the Hot 97 Summer Jam was easy. "I just asked him," he recalled nonchalantly. "We was talking about doing a song - I did a remix
on his album for 'Rock My World' - so we would talk
on the phone. He was talking about 'Hard Knock Life'
one day, [and] I'm looking at the phone like, 'That's
so bugged out!' [He told me,] 'I mean the rhythm, the
way you was rhyming on there was so in the pocket.'
So I just asked him."
The Blueprint is due in stores September 18th.

14, 2001: More Details On MSG Performances... |
|
The
following has been taken from MTV [Monday, August 13, 7:22 PM EDT]:
Michael Jackson will perform past hits with new-school
pop stars Britney Spears and 'NSYNC at
his upcoming 30th-anniversary gala.
Jackson and pop princess Spears will duet
on "The Way You Make Me Feel", Jackson's
# 1 single from 1987's Bad, at the first of two shows dubbed "Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration,
The Solo Years", the event's publicist said Monday
[August 13]. The new information sheds light on a pair
of concerts whose content has remained obscure to date.
The Jackson 5, performing together for the first
time in 11 years, and 'NSYNC will team up for "Dancing Machine" during the same September
7 show at Madison Square Garden.
Jackson's September 10 "Celebration" will include
other superstar performances. Latin singer Ricky
Martin will perform "Don't Stop 'Til You Get
Enough", Jackson's first post-Jackson 5 solo
track to reach # 1 [in 1979], Martin's spokesperson
said.
On September 10, Missy Elliott and Nelly
Furtado are expected to perform their remix of Elliott's "Get Ur Freak On".
Another Latin heartthrob, Marc Anthony, will
tackle Jackson's 1980 ballad "She's Out of My Life" during the first show, Anthony's spokesperson
said. Although he has been announced for September
10 as well, his spokesperson said Anthony is
still negotiating the later appearance. If he performs
both nights, he may sing his upcoming Rob Thomas-penned
single, "Tragedy".
Lil' Kim, Deborah Cox, Mya and Tamia will collaborate on "Heal the World" during at least one of the shows, according to
a source close to the production. Organizers have advertised Cox and Mya as performing both nights.
Although Jackson friend and seasoned entertainer Liza
Minelli's September 7 selection remains
unannounced, she will sing the 1995 Jackson single "You Are Not Alone" with a 300-member gospel
choir on September 10.
Whitney Houston will sing a ballad, and
teen country star Billy Gilman will cover 1972's "Ben" [Jackson's first # 1 solo single] on the
celebration's first night, according to the event's
publicist.
Lenny Kravitz and former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash are slated to perform "Beat It" with
Jackson during one of the shows, according to a
source close to the production.
Several other artists - including Shaggy, Jill
Scott, Monica and Luther Vandross - have yet to decide
what they will perform, according to their respective
publicists.
Diana Ross, who was at one time announced as
a performer, is off the schedule, according to
the celebration's organizers.
Jackson and his brothers convened in Los
Angeles on Friday to rehearse for the shows.

following has been taken from Rolling
Stone [Tuesday, August 14, 10:24 AM EDT]:
The D-12 album isn't the only place you'll find Eminem
this year, as he has just laid down vocals for the upcoming
Jay-Z album, The Blueprint. Eminem contributes
an animated rap on "The Renegade", a song
in which both he and Jay-Z boisterously answer critics
who dog them for being bad influences.
Jay-Z's other guests include Q-Tip, Slick Rick and Biz
Markie, who join him on "Girls, Girls, Girls" - a thematic
update of the Beach Boys "California Girls" and the
Rolling Stones' "Some Girls", in which Jay-Z expresses
his affection for women of all nationalities. Jay-Z
has also recorded a duet with Michael Jackson
for the album, according to Damon Dash, CEO
of Jay-Z's own Rock-A-Fella Records, and the rapper
is also expected to appear on Jackson's upcoming Invincible
album.
The fist single from The Blueprint, "Izzo
[H.O.V.A.]", also features Michael Jackson,
albeit briefly, courtesy of a sample of the Jackson
5's "I Want You Back".

11, 2001: Jermaine To Appear At Michael's Celebration |
|
The
following has been taken from Launch [Friday, August 10, 04:57 PM EDT] and Planet
Jackson:
Jermaine Jackson Agrees To Appear At Brother Michael's
Celebration
Following several weeks of trading blows through both
publicists and the media, Jermaine Jackson has
agree to appear at brother Michael's 30th anniversary
concerts on September 7 and 10.
Concert organizer David Gest announced, "Jermaine
was always an integral part of the Jackson 5. I am delighted
he has signed his contract and will be joining his brothers
Michael, Jackie, Marlon, Tito, and Randy for these very
special evenings. Personally, all the brothers and I
have been friends since our early teens and it is very
gratifying that a dream will become reality as we celebrate
these events together. Michael is extremely happy that
all his brothers, the original Jackson 5 and the original
Jacksons, will be involved in these milestone events."
Getting Jermaine on the bill was not easy. On July 20,
Jermaine and brother Randy issued a joint statement
detailing why they had at that point decided not to
appear at Michael's show. The statement read: "We
have not formally signed a contract to participate in
the concerts and dinner celebrations for a number of
reasons. The exorbitant ticket prices being charged
by promoters will prevent some of our most loyal and
true fans from attending."
Next came a July 24 announcement from Marlon that read,
in part: "I am sorry for the confusion my brother
Jermaine has caused by his statement, which he also
attributed to my youngest brother, Randy." Marlon added, "Randy will be a part of these
evenings and the public will see the original Jacksons
reunite."
With Friday's [August 10] announcement that Jermaine
has finally signed on, both the Jackson 5 and Jacksons lineups will be on hand to perform at
the Madison Square Garden shows next month.
